When we went for her 15 month check up, Dr. C looked at her teeth and checked her mouth and told us that she probably needed to go in for her first cleaning since she had so many more teeth compared to her last check up.
So, we scheduled a visit with the pediatric dentist just down the road from her doctor's office.
Jonathan and I tried our best to get her prepared last night. We watched a video of Mister Rogers going to get a shot. It was about being brave, so we figured it was relevant (plus, we were going for flu shots after the dentist- getting it all knocked out in one day). Then, we watched a You Tube video of a real toddler going to the dentist for the first time. It was great, because the dentist explained all of the equipment and let the little girl look at the chair.
We were the very first appointment of the morning, and miracle of all miracles, we were there early!!! Helen Claire had to wait for a little while, but she didn't mind one bit. There were cars to sit in and a movie playing, so she had a lot to take in.
Babydoll got to go to the dentist, too, to help Helen Claire feel more comfortable (and just in case there were any meltdowns).
When we got to the back, Mrs. Chasen let me sit on a little stool beside the big chair, and she let Helen Claire sit all the way up. She did so well, and everyone was really impressed. She was so chill about the whole thing.
She let Mrs. Chasen look in her mouth and clean her teeth. She barely complained at all.
When the dentist came over to check her, she put her little arm around his neck and let him look in her mouth. I wish I had a picture of it. He even commented that he tried to get his little girl to snuggle with him that morning, and now he was getting snuggles at work :)
He said her teeth looked great and to keep brushing twice a day with the training toothpaste. She has (almost) ten teeth: the two top center, two bottom center, bottom and top molars in the back, and she is trying to get her two top incisors. They are about half way down. The dentist said she is mature in her teeth development, since usually the molars are not in until around 18 months. He also said once the incisors come in, teething should get easier. Praise Jesus!
Once the dentist finished up, we had to wait for Mrs. Chasen to enter all of Helen Claire's information in the computer. Then, we got a treat for being so well behaved: a bag with a new toothbrush, toothpaste and STICKERS!!!
We have to go back in 6 months for her next cleaning. Let's hope that one goes just as smoothly.
After the dentist, we went for flu shots. It was not nearly as painless as the dentist. It ended with a trip to Target for a prize for Helen Claire and a huge coffee for Mama.
